I grew up as an MK and then I became a PK. MK is for “military kid,” because my father was in the U. S. Air Force. PK is for “pastor’s kid,” because when I was about 15 years old my father felt God was leading him to become a pastor. My family was so surprised! We all respected my father. We knew he was a good man, but a pastor? Little was I to know then that many years later God would lead me to be a pastor. I have helped new churches begin, first in Tampa, Florida then in Japan. I met Tammy just a year before going to seminary. Tammy grew up in Southern California.

We have been married 19 years, and we have two adopted children. Jonmichal Makoto is seven and Madison Ayumi is five. They are Japanese, and they keep us busy. We adopted them while we lived in Japan from 1995 to 2002. Since August of 2003 we have lived in Nashville. We are grateful to God for many friendships among Japanese here. If you are reading my profile, we hope we can become your friend too!

Sunday, September 9, God gave our Japanese fellowship a special present as we celebrated our fourth anniversary of Japanese worship at First Baptist. Mr. Toshiyuki Kuboyama was baptized. Just as fresh rain finally returned the “green” to Nashville, Mr. Kuboyama’s baptism ended a drought of more than a year since our last baptism. What makes his baptism even more significant is that he is the first Japanese man to be baptized in four years. After witnessing his changed life one Japanese lady said, “Now I have hope for Japan!”

You see, Japanese businessmen typically do not return home from work until 10 P.M. on an “early” night. Men simply do not have time to consider spiritual things. Mr. Kuboyama was no different UNTIL he came to Nashville seven months ago. Since coming to church he realized how his self-centered lifestyle overlooked his family. He explained that Japanese men go out to drink with other businessmen at the end of the work day as part of work expectations. What little leisure time he had, he used for hobbies like playing golf. He thought he was just a “normal” guy meeting his primary family responsibility by bringing home the paycheck.

Now he knows differently. Now he knows Jesus as his Lord and Savior!

FBC family, you are giving us a “window of opportunity” that may be the only chance for many to consider the claims of Jesus. One life at a time we dream to change Japan from Nashville.

Thank you!

Mission Pastor Barry Walker reports nearly 100 Japanese and other interested friends attended a special spring worship service on Sunday, April 2, which was called “The Bible and Japanese Culture.” The focus of the special evangelistic service was to show a documentary entitled, “God’s Fingerprints in Japan: Is there evidence of the Creator God in Japanese history and culture?” After Pastor Walker preached in Japanese, a program of Japanese music and dance followed with a “Koto” (Japanese harp) and violin duet, a “taiko” drum performance and a kimono-clad traditional Japanese dance.

“It seems we have hit a nerve of interest in the heart of Japanese people,” Walker said. For most Japanese, to be a Christian means one must give up his Japanese identity. The researchers in this video believed that originally all humankind worshipped the Creator and therefore there should be vestiges of that knowledge remaining in every society and culture. The findings were exciting. After watching the video, one Japanese Christian woman was visibly relieved saying, “You know, I had hoped that God had left a witness in Japan, but now I know!” A non-believer said, “I’m going back to Japan now, but I want to study the Bible.”

April in Japan is Cherry Blossom season, and people flock to the parks to picnic and party under the flowering trees. “We felt like we had our own ‘matsuri’ (festival) here at church as we typically have around thirty in attendance!” stated Walker. “We sense God drawing people to Himself.”

The Japanese Baptist Church of Middle Tennessee is a mission of First Baptist Nashville and meets regularly on first and third Sunday afternoons at 2:15 at the church.
